Our Impact on Community

Farida's Journey of Determination

Meet Farida, a remarkable member of our tailoring program and a mother of six children. Despite her lack of formal education, Farida trailblazed through our one-year program. Her hard work and determination paid off as she excelled in dressmaking and tailoring. Today, Farida is able to comfortably sew her children's school uniforms and clothes significantly reducing her costs and ensuring her children are neatly dressed in an environment where torn clothes are common. Farida's story exemplifies the transformative power of empowerment within a community. We take pride in our involvement in her journey and aspire to replicate this impact across the community through initiatives that empower individuals, one person at a time

Asham's Journey:

Transforming Lives Through Community Care When Uji program first began, the children seemed trapped in their own shells, their voices barely audible, hidden behind their hijabs. However, slowly they now embrace speaking up, their once-muted voices and shy faces now lighting up. So profound is their transformation that we must now restrain the abundance of stories eagerly shared. Among these children, Asham's story stands out. Initially, this bright eyed five-year-old was a regular attendee, always punctual and enthusiastic. But then she disappeared from the program, leaving us concerned. A home visit by our Social Workers revealed the heartbreaking truth: Asham lay writhing in pain on a cowhide, her body covered in painful sores. For weeks, she had suffered, unable to sleep, eat, or even sit comfortably. Further to her pain, something more seemed to trouble Asham. "I am sad, I missed the program again, my mother could not allow me. I miss my friends and the stories the teachers give us.," She whispered when we enquired. This was a poignant reminder of the impact our program has on these children and the bond we share with them. Sadly, Asham didnot receive any medication all this while as her mother, steeped in traditional beliefs, had resorted to herbal remedies oblivious of the fact that Asham needed more than homemade potions; she needed proper medical care. With urgency, we helped her mother take Asham to Bura Sub-County Hospital for treatment. While Asham is now well and back to the program her mother has become the ambassador of hospital treatment in a community deeply rooted in customs. It's moments like these that remind us of the profound impact we can have on the lives of these children and their families.

Against All Odds: Victor’s journey of resilience.

Meet Victor, a spirited sixteen-year-old FormThree student at Hirimani High School, fondly called "the Neurosurgeon" by his friends. His unwavering determination and exceptional academic performance have earned him admiration from peers and teachers alike. Victor, the fourth of six children, faced immense challenges after scoring 367 marks out of 500 in the KCPE exam, becoming the top student in Tana North Sub-County. Despite his brilliance, his family, led by his widowed mother Ms. Hadija Awadh, faced discrimination on religious grounds, preventing him from securing a scholarship. Living in Bura, Tana River County, they struggled with severe financial hardships, often surviving on one meal a day. Victor's life took a positive turn when Oasis Community Network (OCN) intervened, pulling him out of the rice plantations where he worked to support his family. OCN provided him with school supplies and enrolled him at Hirimani High School, allowing him to focus on his studies and grow in leadership. Victor's journey is a testament to the incredible impact of community support. Through the efforts of OCN, he has been given a chance to pursue his dreams and break free from the cycle of poverty. His story is a powerful reminder of what can be achieved when a community comes together to support its young people.
